Infant Ticket

Before I purchased an overseas ticket, I called Delta Reservations to ask about the cost of an infant/lap ticket for my 17 month old son; I was told the cost would be about 10% of the actual adult ticket. I went ahead and purchased the ticket, $1780.00, and called them back. They added my son to the reservation and quoted me about $180.00, which I had to pay when I check in on the day of travel.
Well, on the day of travel, I was informed while checking in, that the infant ticket price is now $720. Yes $720 for a 25lbs boy that will sit on his mother’s lap! The Delta agent was nice enough to point out that our two options are: pay the $720 or leave the infant behind.
After over one hour of trying to explain to the agent that I called Delta before and after I purchased the ticket to make sure of the infant ticket price, he was able to reduce the price to about $500. Yes, five hundred dollars for a 25lbs boy that will sit on his mother’s lap!
By this time my wife is crying, my son is fussy; so I went ahead and paid the $500.
Since my son was born, we have traveled 3 times prior to this; the most we’ve ever paid was $110 (with Lufthansa) for a transatlantic flight. This was a pricey experience, but one thing I know is I will never fly Delta again. In fact, since I often fly transatlantic, I’m going to do some research and maybe never fly with an American company.

WHAT! Okay, I just purchased a ticket with Delta to fly with my wife and newborn son in June from Germany to AZ. They told me the same and quoted me 64 USD for the infant in lap ticket. I had the agent leave a note on my ticket that that is the quoted price. I just called again to confirm that it is 64 USD in TOTAL (including taxes and fees) and a separate agent said yes, I did only have to pay 64 USD at the ticket counter (since they need to print a paper ticket for my wife). So what the heck is going on? Are both the agents misinformed or what? I will be PISSED if after calling twice, and being told twice 64 USD is the full cost and then be told that it is not the correct price at the counter! Suggestions anyone?

We’ve traveled many times with infant on lap (my older son is now 4 and my younger son will soon turn 2). Each time it is a nightmare. It always takes at least 30 minutes for the agent to print the infant ticket during checking. It seems as if they have to figure out the whole procedure each time! The agent has to be on the phone the whole time talking to the main office. It’s hard for us as our kids are active boys and they are running around everywhere and we’re holding the line. The trip is only starting and we’re already exhausted.
Obviously we’re not the only ones traveling with infants and I don’t understand how difficult it would be to streamline this process a bit.

Just got a call from Delta. We booked one way tickets to North Africa. Turns out my infant needs to buy a round trip ticket. What? Sorry Norah, I guess you have to go home.
